Danish tennis star Holger Rune has asserted that he is “not that far away” from the top tier of men’s tennis, specifically referencing current dominant forces Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. Rune’s comments come as he looks to elevate his game, recently engaging in a mentorship arrangement with tennis legend Andre Agassi.
The world No. 8 expressed his belief that while the gap might be significant for some, he sees himself firmly within striking distance of Sinner and Alcaraz, who have collectively secured the last seven Grand Slam titles. “I see my high end of tennis to be really, really high, so I just have to lift the button, really, and stay more consistent to win more matches,” Rune stated.
Seeking Consistency and Strategic Improvements
Rune acknowledged that achieving the level of consistency displayed by Sinner and Alcaraz is key to his ascent. He highlighted the need to avoid feeling compelled to play “spectacular tennis all the time” to beat them, suggesting a focus on solid, reliable play. His ambition remains clear: to reach the world No. 1 ranking.
The 21-year-old Dane recently undertook a three-day training block with Andre Agassi, an eight-time Grand Slam champion and former world No. 1, ahead of the US Open swing. This collaboration is described as a mentorship rather than a traditional coaching role, with Rune seeking Agassi’s unique perspective on the game. Rune initiated contact with Agassi several months ago, drawn to his wisdom and distinct understanding of tennis.
Agassi’s Mentorship and Tactical Insights
Rune elaborated on the benefits of Agassi’s input, noting that the American provided “very wise words” and offered tips on improving his return game, an area where Agassi excelled. The discussions also included strategies to “make things move a lot more slowly” on Rune’s side of the court. This mentorship aims to complement the guidance of Rune’s long-time coach, Lars Christensen.
The young Danish player has previously reflected on the dominance of Sinner and Alcaraz, acknowledging the immense physical and mental demands required to compete at their level, particularly after watching their intense Roland Garros final. Rune has expressed a desire to emulate the positive emotional control displayed by Rafael Nadal on court, contrasting it with his own more expressive style.
Past Encounters and Future Aspirations
Rune has had competitive matches against both Sinner and Alcaraz in the past, holding a 2-2 head-to-head record against each. He notably defeated Alcaraz to win an ATP 500 event in Barcelona. While acknowledging his past victories against top players, Rune stressed the difference between occasional wins and consistently reaching major finals.
His journey has seen him reach a career-high ranking of world No. 4 and win five ATP titles, including a Masters 1000 event in Paris in 2022. Despite a challenging period with coaching changes, Rune has reiterated his commitment to improving and believes his level is increasing. His long-term goal remains to be part of what he hopes people will one day call the “next Big Three” of men’s tennis alongside Sinner and Alcaraz.
