Emma Raducanu is making waves at the 2025 Italian Open, navigating challenges both on and off the court. From battling a stubborn cold to a comical credential mishap, the British star is showing resilience and good humor in Rome.
A Gritty Victory Amidst Illness
Raducanu secured her first-ever win at the Italian Open with a hard-fought victory against 19-year-old Aussie qualifier Maya Joint. The match, lasting two hours and 44 minutes, saw Raducanu pushed to her limits, eventually prevailing with a score of 7-5, 6-7(1), 6-3.
Adding to the challenge, Raducanu revealed she had been battling a cold in the days leading up to the tournament. “Yeah, I feel like I’ve had this cold the last week or so,” she told the Daily Mail. “It’s hard, you can’t really breathe through your nose and you’re trying to play and do these long rallies, it’s freezing out there, so I guess I just try and take care of myself as fast as I can”.
Despite the discomfort and difficulty in maintaining focus due to rain delays and long waiting periods, Raducanu demonstrated remarkable tenacity. She recovered from a 4-2 deficit in the first set and held her nerve in the final set to secure the win.
Unexpected Opponent Switch
Raducanu’s path through the Italian Open took an unexpected turn when her scheduled second-round opponent, Ekaterina Alexandrova, withdrew from the tournament. Alexandrova, the 21st seed, pulled out due to injury, leading to a last-minute change.
In a surprising twist, Raducanu faced Jil Teichmann, a “lucky loser” who had been defeated in the qualifying rounds. This eleventh-hour switch presented a unique challenge, as Raducanu had prepared to face Alexandrova, with whom she had a prior playing history.
However, the change didn’t seem to faze Raducanu, who confidently secured a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Teichmann. “Well, I won something this week already!” she told Sky Sports after the match, referencing her other, less conventional award.
Credential Chaos: Raducanu’s “Award”
Adding a touch of humor to her Rome experience, Raducanu found herself “named and shamed” at the Italian Open for repeatedly losing her accreditation badge. A sign titled “SORRY I’VE LOST MY CREDENTIAL 2025 EDITION !!!” was posted in the player area, with Raducanu’s name at the top.
Raducanu took the mishap in stride, posing for a picture in front of the sign and sharing it on her Instagram story. She even penned a letter explaining her mistakes, which was also hung on the wall.
Looking Ahead
With her second-round win, Raducanu advances to the third round of the Italian Open. Her potential opponents include Amanda Anisimova and Veronika Kudermetova.
Regardless of what happens on the court, Raducanu’s resilience, humor, and ability to overcome challenges are making her a compelling figure to watch in Rome.
