Emma Raducanu has ignited a controversy at the Italian Open, accusing her third-round opponent, Veronika Kudermetova, of employing unsportsmanlike tactics during their match. The accusation centers around a timely medical timeout (MTO) that Kudermetova took while trailing significantly in the second set. Raducanu’s candid remarks have added a layer of intrigue to her impressive comeback win and subsequent advancement to the fourth round, where she is set to face Coco Gauff.
The Comeback and the Controversy
Raducanu’s road to the fourth round in Rome has been marked by resilience and a growing comfort on clay. After a shaky start that saw her lose the first set 5-7, despite serving for it at 5-4, Raducanu found her rhythm and dominated the second and third sets, winning them 6-0, 6-1 respectively. However, it was an incident late in the second set that sparked the controversy.
Leading 5-0, Raducanu watched as Kudermetova called for a medical timeout, leaving the court to receive treatment from a physiotherapist. Raducanu openly questioned the legitimacy of the timeout, suggesting it was a ploy to disrupt her momentum.
“It was difficult, but luckily I was 5-0 up when she took the time-out. I kind of knew it was to try and throw me off, but at the same time, I kept my cool,” Raducanu told Sky Sports UK following her victory.
Raducanu’s accusation has resonated with many, raising questions about the ethics of using medical timeouts strategically. While injuries are an inherent part of tennis, the timing of Kudermetova’s MTO raised eyebrows, especially since she had not shown any apparent signs of physical distress beforehand.
Raducanu’s Rising Form
Putting the controversy aside, Raducanu’s performance in Rome signals a resurgence in her form. After a string of setbacks, including injuries and inconsistent results, the 2021 US Open champion appears to be finding her footing on the WTA tour. Her ability to bounce back after losing the first set against Kudermetova demonstrates her growing mental fortitude.
“The most pleasing part of today was recovering after losing the first set having served for it,” Raducanu said. “I think I threw in a pretty poor game at 5-4 serving but I felt under pressure on Veronika’s returns – she was literally red-lining everything and it was all going in and I was like ‘I don’t know where to serve’ and it’s not a nice feeling to have”.
Raducanu has also spoken about feeling more relaxed and focused, which has translated into better results on the court. She emphasized the importance of having a strong support system and finding joy in activities outside of tennis.
“I think now I’m a lot better at just you know relaxing at switching off at doing things that make me happy,” Raducanu said.
Gauff Awaits
Raducanu’s next challenge in Rome is a daunting one: a match against Coco Gauff. Gauff, a seasoned clay-court player, has already reached the French Open final. Raducanu acknowledged Gauff’s prowess on the surface but expressed excitement for the opportunity to test her own game against a top player.
“I’m playing pretty good tennis right now, and she is going to be a great test,” Raducanu said of Gauff. “She’s made the final of the French Open, so she’s great on this surface. I’m just gonna keep focused”.
This will be only their second meeting, with Gauff winning their previous encounter at the Australian Open in 2023. Raducanu has stated she has nothing to lose and will go out swinging.
Clay Court Journey
Raducanu has been open about her “complicated” relationship with clay. Despite her success on other surfaces, she has, in the past, found it challenging to adapt her game to the slow, high-bouncing conditions of clay courts. However, her recent performances in Rome suggest that she is making strides in improving her clay-court game.
“I still don’t really feel comfortable but in a way I guess it helps me because I have to be super focused on every single point, just to get my feet right, try and not fall over,” she explained. “It is a big challenge and the balls are long and the balls do get heavier”.
Raducanu’s determination to improve on clay is evident in her willingness to experiment with her game and embrace the challenges of the surface. She has been working closely with her coach, Mark Petchey, to refine her tactics and movement on clay.
Rule Breaking and Umpires
The Kudermetova match wasn’t the only time Raducanu had an issue with rules during the Italian Open. She narrowly avoided punishment after the second set for breaking the rules. After winning the set 6-0, Raducanu immediately went to the baseline to speak with her coach and mentor. The chair umpire called her back to the bench, explaining she could only speak with her team during a medical timeout. Raducanu apologized for the mistake.
Looking Ahead
Emma Raducanu’s Italian Open journey has been filled with drama, accusations, and impressive tennis. Whether Kudermetova’s timeout was a strategic ploy or a genuine medical issue remains a matter of debate. Regardless, Raducanu’s ability to overcome the distraction and secure the win speaks volumes about her resilience and mental strength. As she prepares to face Coco Gauff, Raducanu will undoubtedly draw upon the lessons learned in her previous matches, eager to prove that she is a force to be reckoned with on any surface.
The match against Gauff promises to be a thrilling encounter between two of the game’s brightest young stars. Raducanu’s improved form and growing confidence, combined with Gauff’s clay-court expertise, set the stage for a must-watch showdown in Rome.
