Iga Swiatek, the world’s number one ranked female tennis player, experienced a tough defeat at the Madrid Open semifinal against Coco Gauff. Following the match, Casper Ruud, offered words of encouragement to Swiatek via social media.
Swiatek’s Upset Loss in Madrid
Swiatek’s semifinal match against Gauff was difficult. Gauff dominated, winning 6-1, 6-1. Swiatek, usually composed, displayed visible frustration. Cameras captured her covering her face with a towel, appearing to fight back tears during a changeover when trailing 6-1, 3-0.
This loss marked Swiatek’s third consecutive defeat to Gauff and her most lopsided loss on clay. It also raised questions about her form as she heads into the French Open, where she is a three-time defending champion.
In reflecting on her performance, Swiatek said, “I couldn’t really get my level up. Coco played good, but, yeah, I think it’s, you know, on me that I didn’t really move well… I wasn’t ready to play back the shots with heaviness, and, yeah, with that kind of game like, yeah, it was pretty bad.” She added, “For sure, I feel like I haven’t been moving well and, you know, the tennis also was like on and off, you know, for most of the tournament. So I wasn’t really sure what I have in my tool box, you know, but yeah, for sure, like I didn’t even have a plan B because nothing was working today.”
Gauff acknowledged Swiatek’s struggles, stating, “Maybe it wasn’t her best level today, but I think I kind of forced her into some awkward positions. I’m really happy with how I played today.”
Swiatek finished the match with only 7 winners and 21 unforced errors, highlighting her struggles on the court. This performance followed a previous match against Madison Keys where she uncharacteristically lost a set 6-0.
Ruud’s Message of Support
Casper Ruud, who secured his own spot in the Madrid semifinals with a win over Daniil Medvedev, posted a message to Swiatek on X: “Hey @iga_swiatek keep your head up 🙏🙏 Like millions of other people I love watching you play. Not your day today, but you inspire so many and you’ll be back stronger than ever!!”
Ruud’s message emphasized Swiatek’s inspiring impact and offered reassurance during a difficult moment. His gesture was praised by many, including tennis legend Boris Becker, who acknowledged Ruud’s sportsmanship.
Swiatek’s Season and Future Outlook
Swiatek’s 2025 season has been challenging by her standards. While she holds a 26-8 record, she has yet to win a title this year. She has faced multiple semifinal losses, including at the Australian Open, Doha, and Indian Wells.
Despite these setbacks, Swiatek remains a dominant force in women’s tennis, particularly on clay. As she prepares for the French Open, she aims to regain her form and contend for another Grand Slam title.
Reactions and Analysis
Ruud’s support highlights the camaraderie within the tennis community. His message served as a reminder of Swiatek’s achievements and her potential for future success. As Swiatek navigates this period, the support from fellow players and fans could be crucial for her comeback.
