British tennis player Fran Jones, 24, has provided a positive update following her alarming collapse during a match at the Copa Colsanitas in Bogota, Colombia. The incident occurred in the third set of her match against Argentina’s Julia Riera. Jones was serving while trailing 5-3 when she collapsed on the court, leading to concerns about her well-being.
The On-Court Incident
During the match, reports indicated that Jones had been experiencing breathing difficulties. The collapse happened as she was serving, and she was subsequently taken off the court in a wheelchair. The Colsanitas Cup issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Due to a physical issue, Francesca Jones has withdrawn from her match against Julia Riera at 6-2 5-7 5-3 in favor of the Argentinian. We wish the British tennis player a speedy recovery.”
Jones’ Statement and Update
Following the incident, Jones released a statement on Instagram to explain the situation. She attributed her collapse to a combination of fatigue, the high altitude of the Bogota event, and a demanding schedule that had not allowed her sufficient time to acclimate to the lower oxygen levels.
“Overnight, we conducted multiple studies and it seems my heart worked a little too hard on the day but thankfully no longer-term impact,” Jones wrote. She also mentioned her plans to rest for a few days before resuming training.
Jones expressed her fondness for the Bogota event, stating, “Bogota is one of my favourite events of the year and I hope to reconnect in 2026 under different circumstances.”
Underlying Health Condition
Fran Jones has a genetic condition called Ectrodactyly Ectodermal Dysplasia. This condition means she is missing one finger on each hand and has seven toes. Jones has spoken positively about her condition, viewing it as an advantage in many ways.
