American tennis sensation Ben Shelton has ascended to a new career-high ranking of World No. 8 in the latest ATP rankings released on July 21, 2025, marking a significant milestone in his burgeoning career. Following this achievement, the 22-year-old has revealed his “big goal” for the remainder of the year: to capture a major title and etch his name alongside tennis legends.
A New Ranking Benchmark for Shelton
Shelton’s climb to World No. 8, moving up a spot from his previous ranking, underscores his consistent performance throughout the 2025 season. This achievement places him among the elite of men’s tennis, further solidifying his position as a formidable force on the ATP Tour. The American joins fellow countrymen Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul in the top 10, marking the first time in nearly two decades that three American men have been simultaneously ranked in the top 10.
“Bigger Goals” Beyond Rankings
While acknowledging the significance of his new career-high, Shelton has consistently emphasized that he doesn’t dwell on specific ranking numbers. His philosophy revolves around a continuous developmental process and focusing on what makes him a more complete player. “I feel that I’ve got as far as I have not really thinking about rankings or results, but just the process, the developmental process and what gets me to a place where I can play my best tennis and become a complete player,” Shelton stated earlier this month. “That’s what I keep striving towards. It’s nice to see some of that work pay off, but for me, I just want to keep getting better.”
Instead of fixating on his official ATP ranking, Shelton prefers to monitor his position in the “Race to Turin,” which provides a clearer picture of his performance over a season and his potential qualification for the ATP Finals. His aim is to be among the top eight players in points collected by the end of 2025, securing his debut at the prestigious year-end tournament.
Aspiring to Be an Elite Returner
Beyond general improvement, Shelton has pinpointed a specific technical aspect of his game he aims to revolutionize: his return. Known for his powerful serve, Shelton openly declared his ambition to become “one of the best returners in the world.” He has been actively working on this area, noting significant progress since he started on the tour. This commitment to refining his return game suggests a strategic effort to enhance his all-around play and diminish any “servebot” labels.
Chasing Grand Slam History and Arthur Ashe’s Legacy
Perhaps his most ambitious goal for the latter half of 2025 is to win a major title. Shelton, who reached the semifinals of the 2023 US Open and the 2025 Australian Open, and the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in 2025, has made it clear that Grand Slams are where he plays his best tennis and where he truly wants to “go deep.”
Notably, Shelton has expressed a strong desire to win Wimbledon, aiming to emulate the legendary Arthur Ashe, the only Black man to win the men’s singles title at Wimbledon in 1975. “I know the legend of the [late] great Arthur Ashe and what it would mean to Black people for another Black man to win the singles title at Wimbledon. I want to be that man,” Shelton passionately stated. This aspiration highlights not only his competitive drive but also his awareness of the historical significance and impact his success could have.
As the 2025 season progresses, all eyes will be on Ben Shelton as he continues his pursuit of these “bigger goals,” aiming to translate his career-high ranking into Grand Slam success and further solidify his place among the sport’s elite.
