Carlos Alcaraz and Andy Murray, both former Wimbledon champions, recently traded their tennis rackets for golf clubs in a friendly match ahead of the Wimbledon tournament. The two athletes share a passion for golf, and their encounter on the green provided a lighthearted break from the pressures of the competition.
A Round of Banter and Competition
Alcaraz described the experience as “funny and humbling”. Murray, who jokingly updated his social media bio to “I played tennis. I now play golf,” after retiring, takes the sport seriously.
Who won?
Initially, Andy Murray won their first match. Alcaraz, however, evened the score in a subsequent round. “He said to you to ask me this question, right? I know. I know because he beat me that day,” Alcaraz responded jokingly when asked about the golf match after his victory over Jan-Lennard Struff. He then added, “He beat me in golf that day, but then a few days later we played again and I beat him so it was one-one. We’re tied,”.
Looking Ahead to a Tiebreaker
Alcaraz is eager for a tie-breaking round. “I just love playing golf in my days off. So I know he [Murray] has a busy schedule, I guess, so I will try to set it up, a golf round again, nine holes, and we have to see who wins, you know, we’re tied one-one, so I have to play again,” he stated.
Alcaraz’s Passion for Golf
Alcaraz is known to be an avid golf fan, often showcasing his swing on social media. According to the Royal Spanish Golf Federation’s Handicap Service, his handicap is 11.2. Alcaraz finds that golf helps him disconnect and clear his mind, which in turn helps him perform better on the tennis court.
