Chinese tennis star Zheng Qinwen has successfully undergone arthroscopic surgery on her right elbow to address persistent pain that has plagued her for months. The procedure follows her early exit from Wimbledon and her subsequent withdrawal from the WTA 500 event in Washington.
Surgery a Success, Focus Shifts to Rehabilitation
The current WTA World No. 6, who also holds a gold medal from the Paris Olympic Games, announced on Saturday that the surgery went smoothly and she is now in recovery. Zheng had been experiencing discomfort in her right elbow during training and matches, with the pain persisting despite various interventions. After consulting with elbow specialists and her team, arthroscopic surgery was deemed the best course of action to resolve the issue completely.
Zheng shared an update on her social media, expressing gratitude that the procedure is behind her and emphasizing her full commitment to rehabilitation. She stated her goal is to return to the court at 100 percent as soon as possible, viewing this break as a necessary step for a stronger comeback.
Impact on Upcoming Tournaments and Season
While no official return date has been set, Zheng indicated that her recovery will take “a few weeks and months.” Her recent first-round loss at Wimbledon and withdrawal from the Washington tournament highlight the impact of the elbow issue on her performance.
The 22-year-old had a breakout 2024 season, reaching a career-high ranking of World No. 4, making it to the Australian Open final, and also reaching the final of the WTA Tour Finals in Riyadh. She has been seen wearing an elbow sleeve throughout the current season and has struggled with consistency, holding a 19-11 record with no titles.
Fans are eagerly awaiting her return to peak form, as this “short break” is seen by Zheng as crucial for her long-term career.
