Jannik Sinner, the world’s number one tennis player, has revealed he considered quitting the sport during the fallout from his three-month doping ban. In a candid interview ahead of his anticipated comeback at the Italian Open in Rome, Sinner opened up about the mental and emotional toll the ordeal took on him.
The Doping Allegations and Suspension
In March 2024, Sinner faced doping allegations after testing positive for a banned steroid, Clostebol. He explained that the substance inadvertently entered his system through a product used by his then-physiotherapist during a massage. While the Italian tennis authorities initially cleared him of any wrongdoing, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) appealed the decision.
To avoid a potentially lengthier ban, Sinner agreed to a three-month suspension, which ends on May 5, 2025. This decision, however, was not easy for him.
A Dark Period
Sinner confessed that the period leading up to the Australian Open in January 2025 was particularly challenging. “I remember before the Australian Open this year, it wasn’t a very happy time,” he said. The uncertainty surrounding his ban and the way he was perceived by fellow players created a difficult environment.
“When I arrived in Australia, I was uncomfortable, also because it seemed to me that the other players looked at me differently,” Sinner explained. “For a moment, I even thought about giving up everything.” He described feeling isolated and unable to engage in his usual friendly interactions with other players. “I was always someone who joked about, who went in the dressing room speaking with whoever, but it became different,” he said.
Finding Strength
Despite the immense pressure, Sinner found the strength to persevere. He credited his team and close circle of support for helping him navigate this turbulent period. “In the end, I built my own bubble, where no one else entered, and this certainly gave me the desire to continue, the desire to prepare well for the Slams,” he said.
Remarkably, despite the emotional turmoil, Sinner went on to win the Australian Open, his third Grand Slam title. This victory, he said, was a testament to his resilience and determination to overcome adversity.
No Preferential Treatment
Sinner has also addressed accusations of receiving preferential treatment due to his status as a top player. He insisted that he underwent the same procedures as any other athlete and that his case was thoroughly investigated.
“There were no different procedures. Even if there was criticism in my case that I was treated differently. But I had many hearings. And perhaps they checked me even more afterward,” Sinner stated. He acknowledged the difficulty in accepting the three-month ban, maintaining his innocence throughout the process. “I had a hard time accepting those three months. In my head, I thought: I haven’t done anything wrong,” he said. However, he ultimately decided to accept the suspension after consulting with his lawyer, who advised him that a trial could have resulted in even harsher consequences.
Ready for Rome
Now, as his suspension nears its end, Sinner is eager to return to the court at the Italian Open in Rome, which commences next Wednesday. He is currently on a 21-match winning streak dating back to a final loss against Carlos Alcaraz in Beijing in October 2024 and maintains a significant lead in the world rankings.
“I am very happy that this phase is over, and I am ready to start again,” Sinner declared. He expressed his excitement about competing in front of his home crowd and is determined to put the past behind him. “I miss the competition,” he said. “I’m very happy that this period is done, and I’m ready to play again.”

The program, titled ‘Gioco, Partita, Incontro con Sinner,’ attracted 24.6% of viewers, totaling 4,766,000, nearly doubling its closest competitor. This demonstrates the strong support and fascination surrounding Sinner’s journey.
